– RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC) 2019 Open Awards Competition (West African Call)
The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), a network of 114 Universities in 38 African Countries, is pleased to announce the 2019 RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC). The overall purpose of the RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC) is to catalyze entrepreneurship through promotion of business innovation and provision of seed funding to young entrepreneurs with creative and innovative business ideas among African youth. RUYAEC, through an online application, invites young African entrepreneurs and incubates below 35 years of age to compete for 20 awards that show case their innovations, enterprises, business concepts and propositions. This third round of the RUFORUM Young Innovators Competition is targeted for West Africa
(Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo) countries. The awards will be delivered at the Cape Coast, Ghana during the RUFORUM Annual General meeting convening 2-6 December, 2019.

– International River Foundation, Fellowship for Women in Water Management
The International RiverFoundation invites applications for the Vera Thiess Fellowship for Women. Women from developing countries get the opportunity to gain valuable work experience through the IRF and its partners, with the goal of advancing women’s participation in water and river management. The Foundation offers a 3 to 6 months fellowship consisting of project work, funding for travel, and participation in the 2020 International Riversymposium (China). Deadline: 11 September 2019

FUNDING INNOVATION – MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) provides a range of financial and technical instruments to support projects proposed by enterprises, cooperatives and institutions along the entire commodity value chain in its member countries. These activities cover all segments of the value chain (including production, processing, financing, marketing etc.). This includes services and support functions, that help all participants in the process of value generation to improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of its poorest participants at the bottom of the pyramid. The support is offered mainly through loans, including financing of equipment’s and meeting needs for working capital. The CFC seeks applications of projects that have reached a state of economic, social and environmental sustainability. These applications should clearly show operational and financial viability, with a proven track record.

– United Nations University — PhD Internships in Economics
UNU-WIDER (World Institute for Development Economics Research) invites applications for its PhD research internships program in Helsinki, Finland. Preference is for applicants who live or work in developing countries, and who are in the later stages of their PhD. Program themes in WIDER include the economics of energy, climate change, food security, and others. UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant and a monthly stipend of €1,600 during the period of the fellowship. The application deadlines are 31 March and 30 September each year.
– International Tree Foundation, Sustainable Community Forestry Program
The International Tree Foundation makes grants through its Sustainable Community Forestry Program to conserve and restore local forest resources and associated biodiversity; improve local livelihoods; and increase local resilience to climate change. ITF welcomes applications for community tree projects that take place in Commonwealth countries of Africa. The applying organization must be a registered NGO in the country where the project will take place. Grants are up to £3,000 for 2 years.

– Climate Food and Farming Research Network, PhD Research on Climate Change Mitigation in Smallholder Agriculture
CLIFF-GRADS is a joint initiative of the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change (CCAFS) low emissions agriculture flagship and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). The CLIFF-GRADS program invites applications for short-term (4-6 month) scientific training and research on the measurement and management of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon storage in agricultural systems. Students from developing countries1 who are currently enrolled in PhD research related to agricultural greenhouse gas quantification or mitigation are eligible to apply. Research will be conducted in association with CCAFS and GRA scientists’ projects. Applications are requested on either of two themes:
1. Measurement and mitigation of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions or carbon storage in agricultural systems in developing countries, including in the context of enhancing food security;
2. Quantification and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from reduced food loss in high emission supply chains (e.g. dairy, beef, vegetables, fruits) in developing countries, including estimation of costs and constraints to mitigation.

– National Geographic – AI FOR EARTH INNOVATION, Artificial intelligence tools for a more sustainable planet
The National Geographic Society and Microsoft’s AI for Earth program are partnering to support novel projects that create and deploy AI tools to improve the way we monitor, model, and ultimately manage Earth’s natural systems for a more sustainable future. The grants given by the partnership will support projects that create and deploy open source trained models and algorithms that make key analytical processes more efficient in the environmental field. As an additional opportunity, Microsoft will help the successful proposals make the completed models available for use by other environmental researchers and innovators.
